12-27-17 9:53 AM EST: Did you know that "Auld Lang Syne" began as a Scottish thing? I'm a Scottish thing too. But Auld Lang Syne as we know it began as a Scottish poem by Robert Burns in 1788.

"The song's Scots title may be translated into standard English as "old long since", or more idiomatically, "long long ago", "days gone by" or "old times". Consequently, "For auld lang syne", as it appears in the first line of the chorus, might be loosely translated as "for (the sake of) old times".

The phrase "Auld Lang Syne" is also used in similar poems by Robert Ayton (1570–1638), Allan Ramsay (1686–1757), and James Watson (1711) as well as older folk songs predating Burns. Matthew Fitt uses the phrase "In the days of auld lang syne" as the equivalent of "Once upon a time..." in his retelling of fairy tales in the Scots language." (Wiki)

So the phrase, and song, have been aroud a while. We hear it around this time of year, as we pass from the last 4 digit number to the next. We try to bring optimism with us as we cross that numerical divide if at all possible. Gonna bring some for me, Mrs Brew, our kids, grandkids, and you too, our friends. You bring some for us as you stride across that Jan 1 mark too. Yep, just throw another chunk of it in your optimism sack.

Those who have known me for any appreciable length of time...and I suppose an appreciable length of time denotes that it has been at least enough time to appreciate...know that I like Dan Fogelberg music. Oh, since the 70's I suppose. Dan Fogelberg released "Same Old Lang Syne" in 1980. It was based on a true story that happened in the mid-70's. 1976 if I remember right.

I found this video about that song and inspiring event today and thought it might be a timely thing to post here for another Open Thread.

It was -3F here this morning and will only top out at about 10F or so. Mrs Brew and I left the house at 5:30 AM. I had to get a CT scan of my kidneys, bladder and adjoining components. Was expecting to have to drink some radioactive stuff, then wait two hours before having that done, but they didn't require that. Am supposing they'll require that if they find anything on this one. So insted of 2 hours, it only took a few minutes, then back home to a 70F interior. Yay!

Do you have any New Year's Resolutions or have you stopped that practice? Either way, we remember all the years which have passed (they came to pass) and the hopeful ones ahead. My family hopes the best for you and trust that you hope good things for us too.
